Greg Brenneman, an Iowa State University Extension Specialist from Iowa City, says controlled feeding barns are a benefit to environmental quality. “We’ve eliminated runoff and can better apply manure as fertilizer and not let it run into creeks,” he said. Previously, rain was the best friend of those that raised hogs, Brenneman says, because rain and gravity would often clean the open hog lots. With the modern hog confinement buildings, pigs stand on slotted floors, not in the manure, and manure is held in pits underneath the buildings or in lagoons until farmers are ready to apply it to their fields.
