There are nearly 50,000 farm families in Iowa who are involved in animal agriculture! These families raise hogs, cattle, turkeys, poultry and sheep. They milk dairy cows and manage egg-laying farms. Many of these families are third, fourth and fifth generation on the farm. They are responsible to their families, communities, land and their livestock, and committed to being good neighbors and protecting the quality of our rivers, lakes and streams.
Iowa is a great place to raise livestock. It’s home to knowledgeable, hard-working men and women who have raised livestock for generations—families who contribute a uniquely valuable stewardship and citizenship that is precious to Iowa’s towns and our nation. We’re blessed with favorable weather and rich, fertile soil perfect for growing crops fed to livestock. And our leadership in the production of renewable fuels helps generate a nutrient-rich co-product called distillers grain that’s used as livestock feed.
Strong and vibrant livestock farms are good for Iowa. They help employ nearly 190,000 people, generate much-needed tax revenue supporting local schools, roads and public safety, and boost K-12 school enrollment. Sioux County, for example, leads the state in the number of livestock farms and livestock marketed. It’s also one of Iowa’s most vibrant counties, home to a growing number of young families, strong schools, colleges and businesses, bustling town squares and low unemployment.
The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers believes in the future of Iowa and farm families who raise livestock. As a non partisan, not-for-profit organization founded in 2004 by six Iowa farm and commodity organizations, the Coalition is committed to growing Iowa’s communities one farmer and one neighbor at a time. Our mission is to help farm families who raise livestock grow responsibly and successfully. We assist families in following regulations, safeguarding the environment, identifying good locations for new livestock facilities and being good neighbors.

We also join with Iowans across the state in sharing the story of animal agriculture, its value to Iowa and the farm families who help feed the world.
And it’s a wonderful story to tell!
